First local low-speed EV standards released in Shandong

JINAN, Shandong－China’s first local self-regulated industry standard for low-speed vehicles was recently released in Jinan of Shandong Province, according to a Xinhua news report on August 16. It is promulgated by a new energy vehicle technology innovation alliance in the province.

The many electric vehicle manufacturers in Shandong used to practice different standards of the EU, United States, Japan or Canada as China itself doesn’t have a unified standard so far in this industry. The Shandong NEV innovation alliance set up its own standards by reference to other criteria and adopted the technology parameters and performance indicators between those of electric sedans and non-on-road sightseeing buses.

China’s new energy vehicle development should go in multiple directions, suggested Wei Xueqin, secretary-general of Shandong Association of Automobile Manufacturers. He said low-speed EVs are not low quality products but are suited for the situation in the country, and there is big market for low-speed EVs in the second- and third-tier cities and vast rural areas.

The province saw a rapid growth in the NEV sector with its 17 key low-speed EV manufacturers produced 34,000 units combined in the first half of 2011, up 89 percent over the same period last year.
